Our speaker last Thursday was Mr. John Silva of the Ortigas Foundation. His topic was, “The History of Photography in the Philippines.” He showed various rare photographs dating back to 1842. The highlight of his presentation was a photo taken of Jose Rizal’s Execution, a gem of a photograph indeed because it is the only photo taken during this momentous occasion. Towards the end of our speaker’s presentation, an aerial shot of the Finance Building in Manila and its surroundings taken during the 1960s drew a lot of reaction from the members. The picture showed how clean and beautiful Manila was back then compared to how it is now.

Photographs are still the best medium of preserving memories because a photo says a thousand words. Photographs are excellent heirlooms. So let’s keep taking pictures and preserve them for our next generation.

We have initiated proceedings for our club’s possible Sisterhood relations with the Rotary Club of Chungli East in Taipei, Taiwan. We will need the support of our Chinese speaking members, FDG Benny Pe and Rtn Hedy Huang in communicating with them. AG Rick Yu of RC Valenzuela East is facilitating this opportunity.

Today we discuss how to move forward with our donation to typhoon Pablo victims.

Cheers and enjoy Rotary J

Last week we had Ms. Yoon Kyoung Oh as guest speaker. Ms. Oh is one of 19 delegates from Korea who participated in the Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Program of APCEIU (Asia Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding). She spoke about the APCEIU program briefly and delved into her experience being assigned to the Pinaglabanan Elementary School. She teaches Mathematics but her interest is in Filipino culture because of her desire to help Filipino students in Korea. There was a lively open forum after her PowerPoint aided speech.

Last Friday, January 11 Pres. Jojo Bacarro and I conducted the second part of the Financial Literacy seminar to the 60+ teachers of the Pinaglabanan Elementary School. Our baby Rotarian Jay Penaflor was main resource speaker since the topic was on Investing in the Stock Market. The seminar was also supported by staff from the F. Ortigas Securities, Inc. who provided the account opening forms and snacks that followed the seminar. Thanks to Rtn. Jay Penaflor and PP Jimmy Ortigas.

Today we listen to our speaker, Mr. John Silva of the Ortigas Foundation, his subject matter will be the History of Photography in the Philippines. Let us welcome Mr. Silva to our Rotary Club.

Cheers and enjoy Rotary J

At last week’s meeting we showed pictures depicting the damage of typhoon Pablo and the hardships experienced by our brothers and sisters in Davao Oriental. We also featured photos covering the flow of relief goods that passed through our service partners, IIEE Davao City Chapter and RC Tagum-North.

Depending on the preference of our “major donor” we can continue to use and re-use said delivery network to keep sending relief goods to typhoon Pablo victims.

Today we welcome our guest speaker, Ms. Yoon Kyoung Oh, an exchange teacher from Korea who is assigned to the Pinaglabanan Elementary School. Ms. Oh is here to learn about Filipino culture.

Cheers and enjoy Rotary J

Secretary’s Corner, 01032013

Wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As we resume our weekly meetings after a two week break, we officially start the second semester of our Rotary Year 2012-13. We will devote time to prepare for the coming term of PE Therese Montecer as we wind-down Pres. Jojo Bacarro’s term. We will need to pay our semi-annual dues before the end of the month based on the Semi Annual Report (SAR) from Rotary International.

We look forward with enthusiasm the completion of this year’s plans and objectives as we draft new plans for the next Rotary year.

I want to report that even during our holiday break our Club has been working, fulfilling service projects to our community. PP Pol Leoncio and I flew to Davao City last Dec. 15-16 to administer the delivery of food as relief goods to Typhoon Pablo victims in Compostela Valley and New Bataan in Davao Oriental using money donated by Rtn. Benny Pe Lim. We purchased rice and grocery items in Davao City, had these items re-packed in relief goods portions and delivered direct to the typhoon victims with the assistance of IIEE Davao City Chapter and the Rotary Club of Tagum-North. Recognition also goes to PP Gina Sanchez for covering 50% of our airfare. On a second note, PP Noni Topacio picked-up and delivered blankets donated by Rtn. Benny Pe Lim to the fire victims of Barangay St. Joseph in San Juan City.

With the distribution channel established through our partnership with IIEE Davao City and RC Tagum North, we can continue sending aid to the residents of Davao Oriental whose homes and livelihood were devastated by Typhoon Pablo. Expect further updates on this matter.

Cheers and enjoy Rotary J

Last week we had a guest speaker, Kagawad Danny Florano of  san Juan’s Barangay Onse. He spoke on the subject of Urban Aquaculture, growing Red Tilapia in drums and/or small ponds. The information we received will be useful when we apply for the USD 30,000 Global Grant for a livelihood project. This application will be signed by PE Therese Montecer since it will be during her term when we will see this project coming into fruition.

After PP Tony Abola declined the VP position for the next Rotary Year, we made a few adjustments in the line up of Officers, Rtn. Rose Caoc will be Secretary and I will be Vice President.

We hope Pres. Jojo Bacarro has recovered from his bout with the flu. He was absent at last Saturday’s TRF Annual Giving dinner. Congratulations to IPP Nan Sallan and other members who were honoured during said banquet for their continuing contributions to The Rotary Fouldation.

Cheers and enjoy Rotary J
